While technological advances have made life easier in a lot of ways, they also brought about a few unintended consequences. One of the biggest consequences is the endless distractions we’re all surrounded with. These distractions can make it hard to focus on the task at hand, which can have dangerous effects. In the construction industry, we deal with distractions just like everyone else, but given the nature of our work, the danger level is heightened. To defend against these risks, we first have to identify them.

Cell Phones

Let’s face it, every adult in America is addicted to their phone. The majority of us are never further than 3 feet away from our phones. Study after study confirms that we’re using phones more frequently, and studies also confirm that our cognitive bandwidth goes way down when we’re using our phones. Whether an employee is driving to the office, operating machinery, or just walking around on a job site, cell phones need to stay in our pockets.

Other Car Technology

Cell phones aren’t the only piece of technology that can distract drivers. Radios, air conditioners, and GPS systems can all be major distractions. While it may not seem like a big deal to change radio stations while cruising down the highway, it only takes a second for an accident to happen. Using hands-free controls on the steering wheel can be a good way to keep your eyes on the road, but simply waiting until the vehicle comes to a complete stop is an even better solution.

Fatigue

Working in commercial construction can often mean working long hours. When employees drive while fatigued, they are putting themselves and everyone else on the road in great danger. It’s important to ensure employees are well rested and fully aware before they get behind the wheel.

At Cowen Construction, we’re committed to safety and doing what we can to remove distractions. We believe a safe workplace is in both the employees’ and the company’s best interest.
